We have an AMAZING line-up for our last championship round of the season!

Our guest judge is Anabella Lenzu, presenting the first work-in-progress performance of her new piece, “Pachamama: Mother World,” featuring dancers Lauren Ohmer, Macy Sullivan, Anthony Rosado, Paulina Espinosa, Or Reitman and Alice Pucheu.

Music By Lola Kiepja/ Selk’nam (Ona) Chants of Tierra del Fuego.

“Pachamama: Mother World” will look at the ritualistic similarities between two geographically different cultures, Native Americans and South American Natives. The division line between Ritual and Performance blurs, necessitating further research into the history of these Native American rituals, becoming both an anthropologic study and a creation of Dance Theater.

Introducing our June Guest Judge, Anabella Lenzu

Originally from Argentina, Anabella Lenzu is a dancer, choreographer and teacher with over 20 years experience working in Argentina, Chile, Italy and the USA. As Artistic Director of Anabella Lenzu/DanceDrama, Lenzu draws on her diverse background to create thought-provoking and socially-conscious dance-theatre in the interest of improving our human condition. Classically trained at the renowned Teatro Colòn in Buenos Aires, Lenzu studied the modern dance techniques of Humphrey/Limòn and Graham in New York. Her studies of Tango and the folkdances of Argentina, Spain, and Italy, further inform her work. Her choreography has been commissioned all over the world, for opera, TV programs, theatre productions, and by many dance companies, such as Anna Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble (New York) and Movimento Danza (Naples, Italy). Lenzu founded her own dance school L’Atelier Centro Creativo de Danza in 1994 in Argentina, and has maintained an active teaching career ever since. Currently, Lenzu conducts classes at Peridance Capezio Center, Wagner College and Lehman College.

Lenzu is also a published author for various dance and arts magazines, and plans to debut her first book in March 2013, entitled “Unveiling Motion and Emotion”. The book contains writings in Spanish and English on the importance of dance, community, choreography, and dance pedagogy. Photography by Todd Carroll will document Lenzu’s vast range of experiences dancing, teaching, and choreographing.

Goldie Peacock presents: Drag King Workshop!

Drag king: an entertainer who intentionally assumes a theatrically interpreted guise of maleness in, and for, performance

Captivated by drag kings? Ever wanted to try drag yourself? Already a king, but you want to deepen your craft? Then this is the workshop for you!

What you’ll learn:

drag king history

important resources for current drag kings

costuming, styling, makeup (yes, kings can wear it too and look good doing it, honey), facial hair, packing, binding

how to concoct a dynamite persona

how to perform a fierce number

This workshop is open to people of all gender presentations and identities, and all levels of performance experience (including the lack thereof).

Goldie Peacock is a Brooklyn-based genderblending drag king who has been called “smart, audacious and delicious” and “the most flamboyant, regal bird in the menagerie”. A two-time winner of Oberlin Drag Ball’s notoriously fierce runway competition, as well as the recipient of the Portland Phoenix’s “Best Dance Performer” Award, Goldie frequently appears in NYC at Boxers Off Butch Burlesque at Stonewall and Switch N’ Play’s Open Drag Night at Outpost Lounge. Goldie performs and emcees nationally and has served as a guest celebrity judge for NYdragU, the Mr. Philadelphia King Competition and Boston’s “Traniwreck”. Goldie has taught at Oberlin College (Ohio), Pure Movement Portland (Maine) and the Cultivate Contemporary Dance Festival (New Hampshire). Most recently, Goldie co-hosted Tufts Drag Ball with Jujubee of Rupaul’s Drag Race, and will perform at Brooklyn Pride 2013. And now, meet Lizzy Mulkey, our final choreographer for May 2nd

Lizzy Mulkey is from Venice Beach California. Graduated from Loyola Marymount University with B.A. in Dance/ Dance Science. While spending the last 7 years teaching Pilates and yoga she has choreographed and danced in various venues in Los Angeles as well as Dance Camera West. Lizzy is interested in site-specific dance and is excited to begin her east coast dance projects, coming soon. She is extremely thankful to Jill for creating XYZ NYC, which is a superb platform to mingle as artists and green light projects that otherwise might get stuck in your brain attic.

Meet Lisa Woods, one of our new choreographers for May

Lisa Woods is a performing artist living in NYC. She is a company member of Movement Workshop Group and has performed and choreographed professionally with Berkeley City Ballet, Kunst-Stoff, BalletNY, Lines Ballet Ensemble, The Cutting Ball Theater, American Repertory Theater. She has a BFA in Acting from Emerson College, Boston. At the age of 15, Lisa was a semi-finalist in the Youth America Grand Prix and soon after, moved to Washington D.C. to continue her ballet studies with the Washington School of Ballet. She has attended Lines Ballet Traing Program, American Ballet Theater summer intensives and has trained with Wilhelm Burmann, Maggie Black, Valia Seiskaya, Leslie Brown, Roudolf Kharatian, and Eleanor D’Antuono, among others.

Reintroducing Samantha Carmean, another xyz nyc favorite

Samantha Carmean is a NJ-based performer, choreographer and arts administrator, who holds a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Past performance credits include work by Scott Putman, Martha Curtis, Pam England/Ground Zero Dance, Bill T. Jones, and Mark Morris. Her own work has been presented by VCU (where she received recognition as an Outstanding Choreographer,) the Bates Dance Festival and the Tank. Sam currently performs with the NYC-based human kinetic movement arts, directed by Yana Schnitzler, and is working towards her 200-RYT certification. She’s excited to be part of the crazy-awesome collaborative process that is xyz nyc.

Adrian Jevicki is a Brooklyn-based dance and theater maker, creating inter-disciplinary works about the relationships between people, their ideas and their things. Using a movement vocabulary obsessed with action and reaction (both conceptually and physically) and funked-out psycho-sexual vibes, he makes dances that themselves ask questions.
